Teeth cleaning in dogs and cats
How do animals get along with no tooth brushing? If we must, aren’t they, too? The answer to that question is that they do. In this article we’ll review the different methods of cleaning your pet’s teeth, why it’s important and how to know if your pet is suffering from any dental problem.
Why is it important to keep your pet’s teeth clean?
Our pet’s teeth are made of a material called dentin and covered in enamel. Even tough our pet’s teeth often intimidate us with their large size, the enamel layer covering it is only one third in comparison to ours, and thus more susceptible to damages. In addition, our pet’s saliva contains more calcium than ours, and because of that they are more susceptible to limescale (often called tartar or calculus) build up.
How can I know if my pet is suffering from any dental problem or disease?
Clinical signs of dental disease or problem include bad breath (it’s important to remember that normally dog or cat breath has no smell), brown staining on teeth, red gums (more so closer to where they meet the teeth, an inflammation called gingivitis), avoidance of chewing hard or large items. Usually, the condition won’t cause our petss to avoid eating, no matter how much it hurts. For that fact, we have to be alert to the other sign so that we can help our pets feel better.
How can I keep my pet’s teeth clean and healthy?
In order to keep our pet’s teeth clean and healthy – the best form of medicine is preventive medicine. You can start brushing your pet’s teeth (usually on weekly basis, and only with a toothpaste made for pets). It’s important to start brushing their teeth as young as possible as they will get used to it faster. Even if you’ll brush your pet’s teeth regularly, there is still a chance that sometime in the future they will need a professional teeth cleaning by your treating vet, and even sooner and more frequently if you don’t brush your pet’s teeth at all. Professional teeth cleaning is done under anesthesia, and therefore is not a procedure to be taken lightly. However, in some cases it is a must. Professional teeth cleaning would offer our pets a more healthy and pain free future.
Most veterinarian would recommend to have a professional teeth cleaning annually, but if you do your homework and brush your pet’s teeth at home – there is no reason for it to not be further apart.
Keep your pets healthy and pain free!
